In Australia no legislation yet exists to regulate the use of the word "organic". At the moment any company can describe their product as organic or even use the word organic in their brand name. The increasing popularity of organic skin care products in the market place means that many companies are doing just that. Often products described as organic or natural may only contain a small percentage of organic products - this is known as "green washing".
In 2010 a new National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic products was adopted by the Australian government. For the first time consistent, clearly defined benchmarks for industry and consumers have been published. There are seven organisations (including NASAA) that are accredited by the Australian government to assess and approve products that meet these National standards.
